The operators say that those spreading the rumours want to tarnish their names and business reputation. They add that some people are spreading malicious information about them having affairs with school girls.

Led by the Northern Uplands Bodaboda Association chairperson Francis Ndegwa, the operator’s defended their reputation saying that they do their business professionally.

“It is unfair for some people to accuse bodaboda operators of sleeping with school girls and having affairs with their female customers,” he said.

Ndegwa stated that bodaboda operators who are members of the association are well behaved and don’t engage in questionable behaviours.

“Some of us are parents and we have daughters and sons and for some people to spread such information is not right,” he said.

The bodaboda operators blamed business rivalry on the rumours but vowed to go on with their work.

A section of parents in the area have been blaming bodaboda operators for allegedly having affairs with school girls.

According to Kezia Wairimu, a children officer in Lari Sub County, cases of girls dropping out of school as a result of being pregnant are common.

“In most cases these school girls are impregnated by bodaboda riders who give them rides and lure them with gifts,” she said.
