Mutethia said many families were languishing in abject poverty due to heavy burden of raising their children and grand children whose fathers are not well known.

“As women we are tired of raising children we do not know their fathers, there is no money and time,” said Mutethia.

She spoke during the 53rd Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Mavoko Stadium in Athi River town on Monday.

Mutethia said majority of the women engaged in odd jobs to fend for their nuclear families hence could not take care of the “fatherless” grand children.

She said underage girls were visiting bars in company of either elderly men or boys who end up impregnating them after they get drunk.

Mutethia said the government should ban bars that admit children and tolerate irresponsible sexual behaviors thereby exposing girl child to danger.

She said parents should take full responsibilities of their children during the December holidays.

“Girls should relax at home during the school holidays, we will ensure men and boys who impregnate underage girls are arrested,” said Mutethia.

Mutethia said boys cannot afford providing basic needs for the children.

She said cases of girls dropping out of school due to early pregnancies in Mavoko were on the rise.

Mutethia said many youth were engaged in uptake of drugs and alcohol.
