Residents of Kaewa location in Matuu Yatta on Monday welcomed the week in a sad manner. This is after a Toyota Probox that was transporting Miraa hit a person leaving him with serious injuries.
According to Matuu residents, the vehicles used to transport Miraa and Muguka (a variant of Miraa) from Meru and Embu are driven recklessly and by speeding drivers.
The vehicle that was using the Kivaa Kanyoonyoo route hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road directly opposite Kaewa Secondary School. The area residents who were angered by the reckless drivers held protests shouting, ‘we do not want Miraa anymore in Matuu.’
Speaking after the incident, Masinga Central Ward Representative Joshua Kiilu rebuked the speeding by the Toyota Probox drivers stating that the law will catch up with them. He confirmed the accident saying the injured had been taken to Matuu hospital for treatment.
“Toyota Probox drivers plying this route and even across the country have been very reckless. We do not want these reckless drivers to use the Kivaa-Kanyoonyoo road from today because those who are being hurt and killed are our people,” said Kiilu.
This comes barely a week after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched a crackdown on all Toyota Proboxes engaging in illegal public transport in the country.
