Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has told Nairobi governor Evans Kidero that the national government will not pay the debt it owes the county government.
Speaking to Citizen TV on Sunday, the CS said the county cannot tax the national government since the latter has a superior placement and that it was improper for the county to demand payment.
“How can the county government demand payment from the national government, which is superior to it?” posed Nkaissery.
Kidero had earlier insisted that the state owed his county Sh62 billion in unpaid land rates, parking fees and other basic services.
According to the county boss, the Department of Defence is the highest among those who have defaulted in making payments.
Kidero had further revealed that the Judiciary, Kenya Industrial Research and Development, Police Service Commission and the Office of the President have debts of Sh93.87 million, Sh67 million, Sh5.6 million and Sh63.91 million respectively.
Kidero had earlier said that failure by the national government to pay the county had led to a lag in development in a number of key sectors.
