Uchumi Supermarket Kisii branch is among the four other branches that have been closed down in Kenya.
The move is part of a shake-up process aimed at reviving the retailer’s performance in the country according to its chief executive Julius Kipngetich.
“Their closure will enable us channel our resources to fewer branches and optimise operation for maximum gain,” Kipng’etich said.
Uchumi says the closure of the branches which include Taj Mall, Embu, Eldoret Sugarland, Nakuru and Kisii will help reduce the retailer’s operational costs.
Prior to the closure of the struggling chain supermarket, over 250 employees are set to be laid off.
Kipng’etich has numerously faulted the previous administration under the leadership of Jonathan Ciano for uncontrolled expansion that lacked a proper strategy.
