Lack of a special secondary school for children living with disabilities in Kisii County is causing a challenge in the advancement of their education.
According to some of the parents in the area, they have been forced to stop taking their disabled children in school since they are located far from their home.
They are now calling on the county government in collaboration with the national government to ensure they establish some schools closer to them for their children to access education.
Led by Wilfred Nyasani the parents consequently challenged the County Executive in charge of education, sports and youth development together with the ministry of education and other stakeholders to move with speed and establish a special secondary school for children living with disabilities.
He said that it was sad to see young bright children living with disabilities drop out of school after class eight because the county does not have a special secondary school to accommodate them.
“At least 1,000 children with disabilities have been assessed and many are being hidden at home by their parents," he said.
"The sad part is that out of all those only 150 are in school, we need more schools to accommodate these special children and train them to be independent,” he added.
