Kikuyu Council of Elders Association members from Kiambu County have dismissed word that they endorsed Nairobi governor Evans Kidero’s for a second term in office during their recent City Hall visit.
Speaking at a hotel in Nairobi, association chairman David Mwangi Ngubia dismissed the pledge earlier made by a faction led by Captain Waweru Mbugua and said that this should never be regarded as an official stand of the elders.
They said Waweru's faction are “neither members nor officials or spokespersons of the association in Kiambu County.”
“We have gathered that they went to tell Kidero to protect their investments and ask for protection of hawkers who come from Kiambu before pledging to support Kidero’s re-election using our association’s name which was wrong because they are not registered members and what they pledged was and still remains contrary to our official stand,” said Ngubia.
“We in Kiambu are not ready to involve ourselves with the opposition in Nairobi or any other part of the country. We are solidly behind the Jubilee government led by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto,” the elders said.
“We therefore strongly distance ourselves with that group led by Captain Waweru and warn them to stop posing as members of Kikuyu Council of Elders forthwith,” they added.
The association has listed the council's bona fide members from Kiambu as David Mwangi Ngubia (chair), Samuel Ngigi Kanyingi (vice-chair), Francis Mungai Karari (secretary), Emmanuel Muiruri Njogu (assistant secretary) and Bonface Kiuna Muiruri (treasurer) and warned citizens against being duped to believe any communication from people not on that list.
“Our chairman, Mr Ngubia is the only person who can [communicate] our matters to the media. Any other communication issued by other persons should be ignored and dismissed with utmost contempt,” warned Karari.
Captain Waweru last week led a team of Kiambu elders owning businesses in Nairobi to a meeting with Kidero at his office.
In the meeting, they vowed to convince Kiambu residents registered in Nairobi to elect Kidero for a second term.
