The Kenya Meat Commission has moved to clear the air over allegations of unpaid dues for Garissa farmers who offered their herds to be slaughtered during the ravaging drought.
The commission's manager Joseph Learamo, in a statement issued that the agency does not owe any herder from any of the ASAL counties any monies.
“The commission had earlier on paid for about 600 cattle that were slaughtered during phase one of the off-take program in Garissa county. Remaining payments for the 30 cows that had never been paid were fully settled on Tuesday this week,” said Leramo.
He further revealed that payments for the 30 cattle had been delayed because they were above the expected and they could not turn away the farmers who had agreed to offer their animals for slaughter.
“Garissa livestock farmers had supplied 30 more cattle than expected and we have cleared all their payments on Tuesday this week ,” he added.
Learamo also said the cattle had been supplied by farmers from all the Garissa sub-counties.
