The elders say push by Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) and the council of governors could otherwise be used for development.

Led by their chairman Simon Wachira Githinji, the elders have vowed not to support the referendum under any circumstance saying the most important thing now is to support the government of the day to ensure that it delivers on its promises to the people.

“The President took power just the other day and what he needs now is our support. Cord led by its principals need to understand that,” Githinji said.

The elders added that the referendum will be an extra burden to the already overtaxed Kenyans saying that the government has not set aside any money for the purpose and therefore it will be required to collect extra taxes to fund the exercise.

“Kenyans should not be duped by those saying that the donkey is tired when they want to add the same donkey some extra luggage in the name of a referendum,” Githinji said in reference to Cord leader Raila Odinga’s popular analogy.
