Issuing the statement on Sunday, the CS warned the opposition and its supporters of dire consequences in the event that they take part in the unprotected demonstrations. Nkaissery noted that they had more than enough teargas canisters to lob at the protestors, a fact that can be interpreted as willingness by the police to use force to quell any emerging issue. Furthermore, the security boss hinted that the police are ready to have refresher training as they engage the Cord premiers and its supporters.

The opposition, through its top most leadership, said they were ready for a confrontation with the police, noting that the constitution acknowledges the place of peaceful demonstrations in pursuit of justice and fairness. In a statement, Raila said that they shall not be cowed down by threats from the government.

In the past protests by the opposition, the police have been on record using teargas to disperse the opposition leaders and its supporters.
