Leaders from the three counties of Ukambani have promised to continue backing President Uhuru Kenyatta, who on Wednesday concluded a two-day development tour of the region.
The President concluded his tour at Tawa in Mbooni where he commissioned the construction of one of the biggest medical training colleges, when completed, in the country.
The construction of the college was started by the Mbooni MP Kisoi Munyao through the Constituency Development Fund and the National Government will provide the funds to complete the project.
Speakers at the event who included MPs from different parts of the region said they have made up their mind and would continue working with the Government and would rally the people to support the Jubilee Party in the 2017 polls.
Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi said majority of the people in Ukambani are pleased with the development projects the Jubilee Government has rolled out in the region compared to what was done by all previous governments.
“Where was all this development which this Government has delivered in the three years it has been in office,” said Mr Mwangangi.
He added that the installation of President Kenyatta as a Kamba elder was a sign of honour bestowed on the President by the elders of the 22 clans of the Kamba community.
“We as a community have never done that for any other leader and it shows how much we value you,” said Mr Mwangangi.
Kitui South MP John Munuve said, “We are proud to be working with you and we will continue this way. We are also praying for the others to see the light and join the right side.”
Mbooni MP Kisoi Munyao said his constituency is one of the biggest development beneficiaries since the Jubilee Government came into office.
He said the Government has embarked on developing the road network in Ukambani which had been ignored for many decades. He said the Jubilee Government has also boosted the security services in the region.
“When the Jubilee Government came into office Mbooni had only one police car, now there are 12 police cars to serve the people of my Constituency,” said Mr Munyao.
The same sentiments were expressed by other speakers who included included MPs Rachael Nyamai (Kitui South), Regina Ndambuki (Kilome Constituency), Joe Mutambo (Kitui Central) and Nairobi. Senator Mike Sonko among other speakers.
Makueni Governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana described the President’s visit to the region as a political tsunami that has shaken all other political formations.
“Let me confess. This two-day tsunami has almost destroyed my political group. And I appreciate your work and I respect you, continue working for us and God will show us the way,” said the Governor.
The Governor said the people of Ukambani appreciate the fact that Jubilee Government has adopted a policy to ensure all Kenyans are served equally.
“We appreciate the fact that your Government has been magnanimous and has given jobs to many people from this region,” said Mr Kibwana.
President Kenyatta said the Jubilee Government has served and will continue serving all Kenyans equally.
“There is no part of Kenya that has not felt what the Jubilee Government has been doing,” said the President.
He urged Kenyans to unite so that they can work together for the country’s progress.
“We have worked very well with leaders from Ukambani and I am happy that they have rejected those peddling petty politics. There are others who do not see. You only see them at press conferences issuing insults. How does that help Kenyans?,” said the President.
The President called on opposition leaders to “style up” so that they can learn to engage in politics that benefits Kenyans.
Deputy President William Ruto commended the Mbooni MP for being a development minded leader.
The function was the climax of a tour that saw the President launch multi-billion shilling projects.
On Monday, the President launched the construction of a Sh18.4 billon road in Mutomo that will open up and connect the three Ukambani counties.
The upgrading to bitumen standards of the 192 kilometre road which runs from Kibwezi through Ikutha, Mutomo, Kitui town, Kabati to Migwani will cost Ksh 18.4 billion.
