The church in Nyanza region has now thrown their weight behind former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to vie for the senatorial seat in the impending by election in Homa Bay County. Nyanza Council of Churches chairman Archbishop Dr Ogonyo Ngede said supporters of the former Prime Minister in Homa Bay County have approached him with the idea. Ngede said it is important for Raila to be in the Senate to enable him articulate issues affecting the country adequately. He said Raila should lead CORD while in the Senate or the national assembly as he waits to contest presidential election in 2017. “Raila must be in the Senate to enable him articulate issues and look after his members in the Senate and the national assembly,” he said. Addressing the press in Kisumu, Ngede said there is nothing new about the arrangement to allow Raila who hails from Siaya County to contest in Homa Bay County. He said the founding president Jomo Kenyatta upon his release from detention went to parliament in the same arrangements and the Luo community should support the idea. “Jomo Kenyatta did it why is it that just because it is Raila people are murmuring. Let's support the candidature of Raila," he said. A statement from Raila Odinga's camp this evening has stated that the former Prime Minister will not contest for the seat as "he has to concentrate on consolidating his coalition".
