Islamic militants Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for both the two attacks which happened in the north eastern part of country.

The militants said they are behind the two attacks which were targeted towards a governor’s convoy and police on patrol where a total of eight security personnel were killed.

In the first attack, three policemen were killed when their truck hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Liboi in Garissa County. A further eight officers were wounded according to a tweet from Kenya Red Cross.

“All the dead officers are from one work station,” said North Eastern regional commissioner Mohamud Ali Saleh. 

“From past incidences, it is easy to see that even this one is the work of our enemy, al shabaab. They plant these IEDs to target our security people.”

The second attack in Mandera, Governor Ali Roba convoy’s was blown up by what the Kenyan Red Cross said appeared to be a landmine. 

This attack a vehicle carrying security officers including the governor’s personal body guard was ripped apart killing the occupants which were five policemen.

The governor, in a facebook post said, “Unfortunately I lost five of my security officers including my personal bodyguard in an attack on my convoy.”
