Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leader Raila Odinga has termed the Monday demonstrations “peaceful”.
This is despite one person being shot dead and 53 others injured in Kisumu County during protests against Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
While addressing protesters at Uhuru Park on Monday, the opposition leader said they had proved they are a peaceful brigade, and were acting within Constitutional provisions.
“We have maintained our peaceful and legal picketing in line with Constitutional provisions of the Bill of Rights,” Raila said.
Raila’s Cord is pushing for removal of the nine IEBC commissioners. They claim the polls bosses are plotting to rig next elections to favour the ruling Jubilee coalition.
Raila revealed that the election officials had sent agents to meet him on Sunday evening, inviting him for talks, but he said the time for consultation with the commission was over.
“This commission has lost integrity and cannot be trusted with our 2017 elections. If by Sunday the government will not have come to the table then I declare that from next week we will demonstrate on Monday and Thursday,” he said.
He warned that Cord will hold two protests next week, and three the following week, if dialogue is not given a chance.
