The government will start a full funding of the school feeding programme for primary schools from next year, Education CS Fred Matiang’i has said.

Since inception in 1980, the programme has been funded by the World Food Programme (WFP) and partner corporates and NGOs with the aim of improving school enrollment and retention areas considered arid, semi arid and urban slums.

Matiang’i said that his ministry has been allocated another additional Sh1.6 billion in the 2017-18 financial year to sustain the programme that helps more than 1.6 million children.

“The business of how we feed our children is our responsibility as government and as Kenyans. We can’t have meetings with others to tell us how to do it,” he said.

This additional funding will see the total government expenditure rise to Sh2.5 billion from the current Sh850,000 annual expenditure.
