The Bungoma senator and CORD co-principal, Moses Wetang’ula has vowed not to support the government’s plan of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The decision by the government was made clear after president Uhuru Kenyatta said he will not allow any Kenyan to go to the ICC.
However in his opposing statement, Wetang’ula said withdrawing from the ICC will affect democracy. He called on the CORD coalition members not to support the government’s plans. He also urged the government led by the president and his deputy, William Ruto not to push for the withdrawal.
‘‘This country must remain under the Rome statute if there is to be any security. This is because the Rome statute hinders political leaders from misbehaving. If the government pulls out of the ICC then it will give political leaders a playground to misuse their powers,’’ said Wetang’ula.
He spoke this in Kajiado on Monday. The idea was also opposed by other leaders in CORD including Siaya senator, James Orengo.
‘‘Pulling out of the Rome statute might lead the country to dark days where leaders could do anything as long as they want. This will also taint the image of Kenya,’’ said Orengo.
