Muslims clerics at the Coast have affirmed that they will not endorse any political outfit or aspirant in the upcoming general polls.

Led by Hassan Nado, Bakari Chemaswet and regional coordinator Mohdhar Khitamy, Supkem officials said they will maintain their neutrality in 2017, as Kenyans seeks to elect different leaders.

In the past, Muslim clerics have been supporting particular candidates and parties for various seats in the region.

Speaking at Sonara Hall in Mombasa, the leaders said that endorsing parties and aspirants is likely to lead to chaos since it confuses most of the faithful.

They leaders maintained that they have to be impartial during the next polls.

“Leaders should not shift goal posts. We must be impartial. Do not vote on the basis of religion,” said Khitamy, as quoted by The Star.

His sentiments were backed by Nado who said they have “seen the telltale signs of trouble in 2017, and would not like to see a repeat of the 2007-08 post-election violence.
