The weak and dormant opposition in the Nakuru county assembly is greatly affecting the oversight role of the assembly, an activist has claimed.
Speaking Friday evening in Nakuru town, David Waweru from the Nakuru Tuko Macho Forum said that the three opposition county assembly members have been subdued by the ruling coalition and hence cannot stop anything being done by the county government.
Waweru said that it is unfortunate that even Jubilee MCA’s have forgotten their constitutional responsibility of over-sighting the government.
“Things can never be right in an assembly where the opposition is outmaneuvered in everything. The three CORD MCA’s in our assembly have totally become voiceless and this makes it easy for the government to pass anything through the assembly because it ahs numbers,” said Waweru.
Waweru added that it was easy for the Kinuthia Mbugua administration to manipulate the county assembly members by giving them handouts.
“Most of these MCA’s have huge mortgages they are servicing and they have run broke and therefore just give them any kind of little money and they will support whatever you want,” he said.
The activists said that the issue of hawkers in Nakuru town would have been handled easily only if the county assembly was sober and focused.
