The weatherman says the country might experience low amounts of rain from now to May, contrary to expectations of Kenyans.
Assistant Director of Meteorological Services James Muhindi is warning farmers to brace themselves for low produce on account of the poor rains.
He however advises planting of early maturing crops to take advantage of the current spell expected to last until mid-May.
A late onset of rains and early cessation of the March to May rainfall season is what has characterized the long rains spell this year.
According to the weatherman, the rainfall bearing belt is stuck on the northern part of Tanzania and the season in Kenya has not established itself well.
Meteorologists are at the same time worried that the weather systems that often encourage the formation of tropical cyclones could worsen the already dire situation.
However, all is not lost as the season could also see heavy rainstorms in some areas including the very dry northern part of the country.
Muhindi is advising county governments to ensure rainfall is harvested to improve the drought situation that has seen livestock die in droves with millions facing starvation.
Global warming and climate variability are some of the main causes of the current situation.
