The popularity of one man guitarists in nightclubs in Kiambu County is on the rise as most revellers demand live music as opposed to deejaying.
This is mostly in clubs frequented by post-youth middle-income patrons.
"Coming to a club and listening to a deejay play the same music you have in house is as better as staying indoors," said Samuel Chege, a live music enthusiast.
According to a club manager at a restaurant in Thika, the cost of having an established recorded artist perform in a club is high due to logistics involved, but having a solo guitarist is quite flexible.
"A recorded musician must bring along the whole band of guitarists, drummers and other instrumentalists which is very involving and quite expensive," he claimed.
Mutungo also known as 'Jetlee', a one man guitar at Turaco Village along Thika Road, said the demand for live music by patrons has even made some recorded musicians to turn to solo performance.
"Even some recorded artists have turned solo since as a one man guitar you only require a drummer and sometimes a back-up artist and you can perform wide range of songs," said Mutungo.
Many clubs in Kiambu County have engaged services of resident one-man guitarists to entertain revellers particularly during weekends. Such clubs include Boggie View, New Muigai Inn, Circular Connections, Wida Highway Motel, Blue-posts in Thika and many more.
