The deputy chairperson of Machakos Social Welfare and Empowerment Board Margaret Mwikali Mbithi has handed her resignation letter to the county government.
Speaking on Friday evening after the resignation, Mbithi explained that she had been saddened by the county government of Machakos officials who had failed to release the money for the marginalised in the society that had been promised.
“I have resigned today because since last year, the government gave us a budget of Sh 1 million for each particular group for instance, youth, the old people and people with disabilities. However, I have not been able to attend social functions because the citizens believe the board has already received the money and residents have been accusing me and other board members,” said Mbithi.
The Board’s main task is to empower the youth, women, the elderly and disabled toward descent living standards.
However according to Mbithi, Machakos residents are angered by the board after collecting data and personal information of the individuals who are marginalised about four months ago but up to today, they have not received any funds to as expected.
“We collected information and after more than four months, we have not acted on our promise to them. Sometimes I go to funerals and I am faced with hostility and a lot of questions from the public who think the board has received the funding and declined to distribute it to them with corrupt intentions,” she added.
The board was formed by Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua.
