The doctors ensured that health provisions and especially emergencies were attended to in order to avoid loss of lives.

Governor Jama said his administration will not sack the doctors who engaged in the strike, adding that the county could not afford to sack them knowing well the history and how the region has not been privileged.

He said all the 22 doctors in Garissa County took part in the strike and have not reported for duty despite threats to sack them.

“Recruiting the current doctors took us time and a lot of convincing, given the hardship conditions. We cannot therefore just sack them with the stroke of a pen. We know what it takes to employ a qualified doctor in Northeastern region,” he said.

“The issue of terminating their services should not be the only option we have. We would like to see all this fiasco come to an end,” added Jama.

According to health CEC Hubbie Hussein, the County had written to UNHCR and other aid agencies requesting for assistance during the strike but none of them responded to their appeal.

Ms Hubbie said that each of the seven sub-county hospitals had at least two doctors before the strike.
