George Kaimburi, the businessman, said that he could not just sit back and watch as the hungry old people suffered.

More than 200 elderly people appreciated the gesture, saying they have been suffering due to starvation as their families watched helplessly.

The situation has been occasioned by failed harvests for the last six seasons due to lack of rain. Theta is among the worst hit by drought in Thika for the past three years.

Kaimburi said it was a way of giving back to the community where he grew up. He promised to continue supporting the residents and urged other well-wishers to join hands and assist the needy in the society to alleviate the problem.

The donations included flour, cooking fat, rice and sugar.

Theta chief Peter Kamau last month confirmed that there is severe hunger in the area and that more than 2,000 residents are desperately in need of emergency relief food.

The National Drought Management Authority has already sounded an alarm over the drought situation in the some parts of the country, including neighbouring Kieni constituency in Nyeri County.

According to a report released by the authority, 20,000 families in the largest but driest constituency in Nyeri are facing starvation and are in urgent need of relief food.

The State and international aid agencies have been asked to assist 60,000 famine-stricken families in drought-hit Wajir South constituency.
