Somalis in Mombasa have distanced themselves from claims of the community taking a political stand.
The community said it has not yet agreed on who to back for the presidential seat, as reported in the media.
Speaking at a Mombasa hotel on Sunday, Mohamed Abdi, who is the group’s chairman, said the community has also not decided which party they will support in 2017.
He accused Abdi Daib of masquerading as the group’s chairman, and issuing political sentiments about the community.
Abdi, who is also the Mombasa Trade CeC, further accused Daib of leading a team that has been making inflammatory political statements, which are not in line with the community’s ideologies and beliefs.
Responding to an announcement on a local radio station that invited the Somali community to a Jubilee political meeting, Abdi said “The meeting is good but has been organised by the wrong person. We will attend it due to the respect we hold for Duale, not because of some people.”
He, however, asked Daib to refrain from making statements on behalf of the community.
