Okong’o cited the voter register which should be audited, registration of new voters, election funding as some issues that need to be addressed if Kenya is to have a peaceful and fair election.

Speaking on Tuesday night during an interview on K24 TV, Okong’o proposed that next year's elections should be moved to March 2018 to give the electoral body, which is yet to be reconstituted, ample time to prepare.

“From my point of view, the country is not ready for the 2017 elections and to have a peaceful free and fair election in this nation, the polls should be conducted in March 2018,” the Senator said.

“We don’t want a repeat of the 2007-08 scenario, and to prevent loss of lives, the nation should conduction elections in 2018,” he added.

He also appealed to all Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 years and above to acquire national ID cards and voting cards as they get ready to vote in the next general election .

The IEBC is being re-constituted and already, the selection panel has shortlisted candidates for both the chairperson and commissioners expected to replace the outgoing Isaack Hassan-led team.
