Barely a week after Bungoma senator Moses Wetangula backed referendum, the former Senate Minority Leader now says the calls are unnecessary.
In his first approach a couple of weeks ago, Wetangula said the country can only tackle persistent post election chaos through a parliamentary system of government.
"We need to fix this by revisiting the Bomas draft. Kenya needs a parliamentary system of government and that is why a referendum is inevitable," he had said.
But speaking at Kanduyi over the weekend, Wetangula said the calls for the referendum were being fronted by 'power hungry' individuals.
However, he added, the country should only focus in amending clauses that do not require referendum.
"We are not opposed to changes but let's not start changes from the top. Let us start with those that do not require referendum.
"Some people are gearing up for it so they start going around the country to solidify their support for 2022," he added.
While both Raila, Musalia Mudavadi and Gideon Moi have endorsed the referendum, Deputy President William Ruto maintains that the country is not ready for the showdown.
Despite reaching a consensus with Raila recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta seemed to be opposing the plebiscite contrary to expectations of many.
