Ford Kenya party leader, Moses Wetangula has claimed that the move by the Uhuru-Raila to initiate referendum was based on benefiting certain families and individuals in Kenya.
Wetangula said that he really wondered how a referendum could be conducted while the IEBC is rocked with disputes.
"The IEBC currently constitutes of three commissioners meaning that they lack the capacity to hold a referendum and thus validating the current calls invalid, " he said.
Wetangula claimed that the call for a referendum is only after benefiting individuals and yet Kenyans need other reforms rather than the constitutional changes.
"We want a United Kenya and we are opposed to ongoing plans to hold a referendum so that few individuals from certain families could benefit, " he said.
He also suggested that the country should concentrate on revamping institutions of governance by strengthening and making them independent.
"Instead of calling for the referendum, we should be seeking ways of supporting devolution, strengthening our security gadgets and stop the ongoing corruption," he said.
Wetangula was echoed by the chair of the women league Cynthia Mutere who said that the referendum process is geared after perpetuating political dynasties.
She said that the process needed to take cognizance of interests of all Kenyans, with the involvement of persons with disability, women and youths.
