[Photo: Courtesy]Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetangula has continued with his attacks towards the Jubilee government, over maize imports. The government has been having tough times, explaining how and why it resulted to importing maize from Mexico, despite earlier assurance that the country had enough maize, and there would be no need of imports. On May 11, a ship landed at the Mombasa Port, carrying a consignment of 29,900 tonnes of imported Mexican maize, citing maize shortage and high maize flour prices. It is because of this that Wetangula has attacked the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led administration.Speaking during the burial ceremony of Mama Penina Khaemba, mother to Trans Nzoia governor Patrick Khaemba, Wetangula said the government made no maize imports."What they did, was to take maize of farmers from Trans Nzoia and then rotate with it at the sea, and come back saying the maize was imported from Mexico," said the Bungoma senator. He accused the government of ignoring farmers plight, by buying maize from them cheaply, and allegedly importing same maize expensively."They don't value local farmers. We asked them to buy maize locally at Sh3,500 but they refused saying government had no money. Where did they get money to import?" he wondered.Through the Ministry of Agriculture, the government said it had allocated close to over Sh6 billion, for maize importation, before the next harvesting season.
