Wetangula says that the brutality on locals by police is unwarranted.

Speaking to journalists at Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos on Friday, Wetangula said that police are not justified to use force on innocent Kenyans.

The Bungoma senator now wants the police to halt the operation to recover the stolen guns saying that the law enforcers have already violated human rights.

“Police have no right to use force on innocent Kenyans in the name of searching for stolen guns” he said as quoted by the Nation.

Wetangula asked the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to order arrest of police officers who have been captured assaulting locals.

“We must condemn and fight police impunity in this country and the IG must move with speed and order arrest of officers leading the Mumias operation,” said the Cord co-principal.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has also condemned the alleged police assault on locals.

In a briefing with journalists in Nairobi on Friday, the commission accused the police of harassing and assaulting innocent residents as they search for stolen guns.

“Police should know that they are not above the law and any acts of brutality by the police will not be tolerated,” said George Morara KNCHR vice commissioner.

Mr Morara said that the commission will move to sue the General Service Unit police for assaulting locals in the ongoing operation.

Police conducting the operation to recover stolen guns in Mumias have been accused of assaulting innocent locals.

The police are also accused of destroying property and allegedly raping and molesting women.

The exercise to recover the 7 G3 rifles and 180 rounds of ammunition stolen from Booker Police post in Mumias on Tuesday has intensified.

Unknown  people are said to have raided the Booker police post, stole the guns and injured a police officer.

The operation to recover the stolen rifles has now been extended beyond Kakamega County as police deny claims of assaulting locals as being claimed.
