The now clearly visible divisions in the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition have been there for more than six months, Ford-Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula has revealed.
The Bungoma Senator traced the root of detachment to the nullification of the August 8 presidential election by the Supreme Court.
In an exclusive interview with the Nation, Wetang'ula said after the popular judgement, ODM leader Raila Odinga started making far-reaching but unilateral decisions without involving his co-principals; Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Wetang'ula.
Raila, without consulting his partners, brought in technical committee led by economist David Ndii to be the top decision-making organ in the opposition coalition.
The new team replaced NASA summit, whose members included Siaya Senator James Orengo, MPs Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren) and Sakwa Bunyasi (Nambale) and former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama.
Wetang'ula describes the technical committee as 'predominantly ODM'.
“It had Raila’s lawyers, strategists, advisors, and party members. We had reached a point where issues were first discussed by this group agreed upon and the summit only called in to ratify the decision. This is not the best way of running a coalition," he noted.
Wetang'ula said rifts within NASA were worsened by Raila's sole decision to give the October 26 repeat election a wide berth.
"The decision to withdraw from the race was not exhaustively discussed by the summit, and so we reluctantly agreed to it," he said.
The ODM leader has since buried the hatchet with President Uhuru Kenyatta, with both resolving to work together in reuniting the nation.
However, Raila's co-principals have dismissed the truce as a personal agreement between two individuals.
