The government has dismissed reports that most of the families of victims of the 1994 Mtongwe ferry tragedy, are yet to be compensated.
During the incident where a ferry capsised, at least 270 were killed, leading to overhaul of ferry operations in Mtongwe, Mombasa.
State House spokesperson Manoah Esipisu said the families of 262 people had already been compensated.
"The Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) is in the process of identifying the families of the remaining eight so that they can also be compensated. In terms of the 192 that were injured, Esipisu said KFS the Board had compensated only a few of those but by the end of March 2017, the government would publish in the media, a notice inviting the people who were affected to come forward to be attended to.
Addressing the press at State House Mombasa, Sunday, Esipisu said : "The government is keen to ensure that everyone that was affected is compensated.''
The Mtongwe ferry will officially be reopened today, Monday, by president Uhuru Kenyatta, after refurbishment at a cost of Sh6 billion.
