Garissa Senator Yussuf Haji will have to pitch tents in different parts of the county in order to retain his seat in the forthcoming general polls after his declared war against him while his brother Bashir has refused to drop out of governorship race.
The senator faces an uphill task to beat his opponents as aspirants continue to bank on endorsement from elders while others wait for their rivals to shelf their political ambitions ahead of the August general elections.
The Samawathal, Abduwak and Aulyhan, which are the main tribes in this part of the nation are all striving to have a share of the leadership of this county.
Haji, who will be defending his seat on JP ticket, will be relying on the clan pact between Abduwak and Samawathal under the umbrella of the Tolomoge Alliance to retain his post after he was named their preferred aspirant.
The alliance has given Abduwak tribe the women rep and governor seat as the Samawathal tribe goes for the senator and deputy governor posts ahead of the polls.
The current senator will be contest against several candidates who have declared their bid including ODM’s Major (Rtd) Aden Sugow (Fafi) and PNU’s Abdullahi Sheikh Dahir (Lagdera).
His younger brother Bashir Yussuf is likely to cost Haji his career after he declared interest in the area’s governorship come August. Haji’s brother has refused to shelf his dream in order to back the alliance’s candidate Ali Korane.
Rtd Major Sugow, who comes from the Abduwak subclan, has trashed the lineup of the elders, saying elders have lost relevance in the current political scene.
“I have rejected the clan elders’ decision because it’s not binding. They cannot impose candidates on the electorate. I have also decided to campaign without aligning myself with any governor aspirant because it won’t be possible to do oversight if your preferred candidate wins,” he said, as quoted by Star.
