Kisumu County received a new Lands Chief Executive Committee (CeC) member on March 10.
Dixon Odhiambo Obungu was appointed Land CeC replacing Nerry Achar who was transferred to the Finance Department as Chief Executive Committee member in charge.
Being Kenya's third largest city after Nairobi and Mombasa, Kisumu town is faced with numerous case of land grabbing, particularly public land belonging to schools and hospitals.
In November 2017, the National Lands Commission (NLC) named the lakeside city as one of the towns with high cases involving land disputes.
Some of the estates with high cases of land grabbing include the upscale Milimani, Nyalenda, Mambo Leo, Kanyakwar, Kondele and Nyamasaria.
The commission said there are high profile land grabbing cases within the city and it was reviewing them with the aim of returning the parcels of land to there rightful owners.
Mr Odhiambo therefore has a daunting task to work with the NLC in reclaiming grabbed land, bearing in mind that some of the alleged grabbers are high profile individuals including former Cabinet Ministers and high ranking politicians.
Governor Anyang' Nyong'o while making the appointment said duties in the docket were crucial adding that "the appointment takes immediate effect".
