In almost all public universities, there is a 10 to  10 rule, meant to control students from over-staying in other students’ hostels.

The rule indicates that male students are only allowed to stay in female hostels from between 10:00am to 10:00pm.

In most universities, anyone found violating the rule risks suspension.

But is this rule working as it’s meant to? Many institutions aren’t restrictive as male students are often spotted at ladies hostels as late as midnight.

A Hivisasa writer conducted an interview to establish if the rule was still being implemented at Maseno University and these were some of the responses:

Moses Ogola: I don’t think so. Some male students are even sleeping in female hostels.

Lillian Munja: No. Soldiers are not doing their job. There is no one to police this.

Titus Baraka: Its slightly working but it should still be that way. If you want someone to leave, just tell him to do so.

Sharon Okoth: No. The rule only works for few weeks after 1st years have joined. After, it doesn’t work anymore.

Evelyne Njeri: No. In fact, when soldiers get hold of the culprits, they are bribed. They will never refuse the cash.

Mathews Kamala: I have never heard of that rule since I joined.

James Ogola: Students are interacting until dawn. I wonder what time the rule applies.

Ephiey Omil: No. But I like it that way.

Euphy Bundi: We are grown-ups. The rule is not working and should not work.

Ronald Mutua: The rule was working when I was in the 1st year. I haven’t heard of it again.
