Nairobi senator Mike Sonko said he will join Cord if Kalonzo is chosen as a flagbearer.
Speaking in Ngelani during the burial of Mavoko Mp Patrick Makau's father, the flamboyant senator said he is ready to support Kalonzo's presidential bid.
But what does Cord stand to gain if Sonko joins them? Well, one thing for sure is that Cord will enjoy massive support in Nairobi county. If Sonko remains in Jubilee, then his supporters, who are mainly based in Nairobi, will not vote for Cord.
Secondly, Sonko will bring with him to Cord the support of the youths. He will make Cord appear a "youthful" party as the senator is mostly associated with youths.
Sonko will also solidify Kamba votes. If he remains in Jubilee, Kamba votes are bound to be divided and this is not healthy for the opposition party.
The "Sonko factor" is something that Cord might want to look into, especially at this crucial moment when the party is yet to unvail a flagbearer.
Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang'ula have shown interest in the post.
