The National Assembly Committee of Agriculture and Livestock will be touring the North Rift region as from Thursday this week.
According to the Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) director Kipkorir Arap Menjo, the committee will be on a fact-finding mission on challenges that farmers are facing.
“I welcome them but before their visit, they should ensure the supplementary budget needed to clear farmers arrears payment is passed in parliament for farmers to plant their maize without it they will have it rough from farmers,” said Menjoin Eldoret town on Tuesday.
“Seriously how will farmers plant their crops without funds? The government must get serious and pay the over Sh4 billion National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) owes us. If they come empty handed then I will not be wrong to assume that they are enjoying their night-outs pretending to be assisting farmers,” he added.
The KFA Uasin Gishu director also called upon the committee to ensure that farmers from the region get enough fertilizers amid planting season.
“This is the region that feeds the whole nation and we deserve to be facilitated with sufficient farm inputs for the country to be food secure. How can we be allocated 582,000 bags of fertilizers and yet we need over 1.4 million bags?” added Menjo.
