Migori Governor Zachary Obado has pressed-upon secondary school students to foster innovation and self-employment as a way of closing the gap between dwindling jobs in the formal sector.
Obado observed that currently there was a great imbalance between the number of graduates released yearly in the job market and the available job opportunities set to absorb them.
He said that the available employment opportunities were meager and could not even absorb half of the youthful graduates.
The county chief also called upon the student not to be choosey in life but be dynamic so as to fit in the highly competitive society.
“No one is limited by his/her field of specialization. No matter your specialization, you still have dozens of opportunities you can create and also exploit,” said Obado.
He singled out himself revealing that before he became governor, he was once a teacher for eight years and then an accountant.
Being dynamic and easily adaptable, he said had given him an edge where he amassed a lot of experience.
Also speaking, Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili told the young learners that it was only through hard and honest work that they will be able attain the minimum threshold required for them to get admitted into the courses of their choice in the University.
The duo made the remarks while at Nairobi University where they attended an open day forum and mentored young high school student also in attendance. Both Owili and Obado are alumni of The University of Nairobi.
