Different artists have dominated the Kenyan rap scene since its inception over a decade ago. Currently, a few of the pioneers still release music. A majority of pioneers disappeared from the scene and they have struggled to make a comeback.
Today we look at top three rappers who ruled the Kenyan rap scene during the yesteryears.
Abbas Kubaff
Without a doubt, Abbas has earned his place in the Kenyan music industry. He is a legend known for the 'Mchizi' hit song released back in 2004. The celebrated rapper is one of Kenya’s pioneer rappers who formed K-South group. In 204, Abbas announced to his friends that he was leaving the country for good. According to close friends, Abbas announced that he was relocating to Malta Island, the largest of the three Maltese Islands.
“Even if my stay in Kenya has come to an end, all I want my fans to know is that I love them but I can’t keep the hustle. I’m doing this for my daughter. The message I want my fans to get from you is that I will keep releasing my new songs regardless of where I am,” said the rapper.
Up to date, Abbas promised Album is yet to be released even though his last project was a collabo with Victoria Kimani.
Kantai
Kantai is a famous hip-hop artist known for hits like Happy, Kantadda, What Mo and Issues. Kantai has been working on a comeback after taking a break from the music industry a few years back. Born in Kenya and raised in the United States battled alcoholism which made him stop making music.
After disappearing from the radar, Kantai made a comeback hit track with Khaligraph Jones titled Ting bado Malo.
Cannibal
Cannibal is considered the King of Mombasa. The rapper temporarily quit music to vie for an MCA seat in Mombasa. After losing the seat, Cannibal decided to be saved. He stated that the election loss propelled his decision to be saved. In an interview, Cannibal claimed that witchcraft was behind his loss.
He has promised to release a number of recorded gospel tracks in the near future.
