Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar receives President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, at Serani Grounds, October 8, 2017. His defection has been described 'monumental' by supporters, 'immaterial' by critics. [Photo: PSCU]The defection of Hassan Omar to Jubilee Party may well be described as one of the most unlikely political moves, Tiaty MP Kasait Kamket has said.Kamket adds that 'Omar has all along been an activist but his defection is his graduation into real politics'."Omar's defection to Jubilee is monumental. For him to realise that unless he graduates from activism to politics he would never achieve much, must have taken him a lot of self-thought," Kamket told NTV's Decision 2017 on Sunday night.Olga Karani, whose defection from Jubilee alliance to Cord in the run-up to 2013 polls was regarded as a 'political thunderbolt', however, described Omar's defection as immaterial."Hassan did a shoddy job while at the Human Rights Commission so I don't expect him to do anything better now that he has defected to Jubilee. Even if we do elections 20 times in Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho will always win," Karani said. She asserted that Nasa isn't keen on 'running all over campaigning like Jubilee because we (NASA) are comfortable that our votes have even increased'.Omar dumped Nasa officially on Sunday saying that he cannot have NASA leader Raila Odinga as the president and Joho as his governor. He added that he would vie on a Jubilee Party ticket, if court nullifies Joho's win through a petition he has filed at High Court, Mombasa.
