As crises lately continue hitting various sectors of Nairobi county, the strategic approach to their remediation seems to be leaving out the devastating unemployment which is the backbone of some of the crises.
The county has been facing insecurity ranging from terrorism to petty theft on the streets, congestion in the Central Business District, insufficient accommodation, and unemployment among others.
It is evident from various statistic that most youths living in Nairobi are unemployed and Nairobi senator in an exclusive interview on KTN television has revealed that CVs of various graduates with good education background lie in his office with no jobs to offer to most of the youth applicants.
Most organizations within the city have been receiving massive applications from prospective unemployed workforce; a clear indication that many are unemployed.
These unemployed citizens lie idle within the county and the saying goes, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop so is what has actually befallen Nairobi county with most youths resorting to crime in order to earn a living.
The few who have not yet associated themselves in criminal activities, have resorted to hawking, motorcycle business and small business which have caused congestion in the main city center providing an ambiance good enough for crimes to thrive.
The county has resorted to decongesting the main city center, a move that has not pleased many because that is where the larger market for those small businesses lie.
Despite going further to enhance security in order to reduce criminal activities, the unemployed youths can resort to nothing short of crime for a living, leaving the core crisis facing the county unresolved. In a bid to resolve the crises associated with unemployment within the city, the county government of Nairobi has no otherwise but to find a way of engaging most of the unemployed youths in income generating activities.
