Fishermen from Kwale have called on the government to intervene and help bring to close the endless harassment by police officers from Tanzania.

The fishermen who spoke to the press on Monday said Tanzanian police officers have taken it a habit to confiscate their fishing gear whenever they go for fishing in the deep waters of the Indian Ocean.

They said they have never crossed into the Tanzanian territory to warrant such arrests and harassment.

Through their leader, Philemon Mwamburi, they traders said only government can help solve the problem calling on President Uhuru Kenyatta to engage his Tanzanian counterpart, John Pombe Magufuli over the issue.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta and John Magufuli recently met in Kampala and announced that Kenya and Tanzania had renewed their good relationship following a series of trade differences," he said.

"Why has the harassment on Kenyan fishermen ended? We need a solution, after all we never fish in their waters."

Kenya and Tanzania share the Indian Ocean border line and such occurrences Kenyan fishermen may cross into Tanzania while fishing because there is no clear boundary in water to separate the two countries. Tanzanian fishermen, also sometime, cross into Kenya.

Uhuru, when he met Magufuli in Kampala on February 23 and the two directed their cabinet secretaries to help to resolve differences between Kenya and Tanzania.
