The lawmaker who has been banned from live television shows because of his combative nature of politics said Wednesday he will be pleased to leave Parliament in 2022 after riding on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train from Mombasa to Kisumu.
Kisumu is the home turf for opposition leader Raila Odinga who Kuria has constantly criticised since he joined Parliament and is among counties that violently boycotted the October 28 repeat election which President Uhuru Kenyatta won by a landslide.
Kuria was recently elected vice chairperson of Parliament’s Transport, Housing and Infrastructure Committee tasked to scrutinise development of key infrastructural projects including the SGR that is set to link Mombasa and the border towns of Malaba and Busia through Kisumu.
“Humbled to be elected unopposed by my colleagues across the political divide to be the vice-chair of the Transport, Housing and Infrastructure committee,” Kuria said.
“I will do all within my ability to help deliver world class infrastructure, modernize our ports and airports, ride the SGR from Mombasa to Kisumu, create the highest standards for our public works, deliver 500,000 affordable housing units over the next five years and make Kenya a regional air and maritime hub.”
The ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has already undertaken feasibility studies on the Nairobi-Kisumu extension.
The SGR railway is part of the Northern Corridor projects undertaken under the “coalition of the willing” bringing together Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.
