Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua is among the leaders who were anxiously waiting for the naming of National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer ahead of August General polls.

Mutua would have suffered a major blow had NASA named Kalonzo its Presidential candidate in the forthcoming general polls.

The former vice President would have been more powerful not only in the region but also the entire nation. The NASA wave would have started sweeping leaders backing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto right from Kalonzo’s doorstep.

Mutua is likely to have been one of the major targets. The battle ground has been shifted to Raila backyard.

Residents of Ukambani are starting to doubt Kalonzo after he accepted to take the position of the Deputy President despite having insisted that he was not going to accept diplomacy this time round. Leaders who were pushing for his candidature will start thinking twice about his stand.

The desire of the Kamba community for Kalonzo to rise to power made them fold their parties just to see his dream come true. Kalonzo rose to become the vice president without bothering anyone to fold up his party.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana was forced to fold up Muungano Party after Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama asked him to do so on several occasions.

Mutua’s chances of being re-elected have increased after it turned out that Kalonzo is not the chosen one. The Maendeleo Chap Chap Leader has become more and more popular.

The governor had hinted on backing the former vice president if he is named opposition’s presidential candidate. The county boss will now have it easy to market his political outfit in the region.

Kalonzo will have an uphill task leading the likes of National Assembly leader Francis Nyenze who had threatened to walk away with other leaders from the opposition if they shortchange Kalonzo before the August general polls.
