While making his political debut, Ranguma, a former Kenya Revenue Authority official was overwhelmingly elected the first Kisumu Governor in 2013.

Following the massive support, Ranguma was pitted to have bright political future ahead but that did not happen.

In the run up to the 2017 election, then area Senator Prof. Anyang' Nyong'o, an influential political figure in the region, declared his interest in the county's governorship.

A major political showdown pitting Nyong'o and Ranguma for the ODM party ticket proved to be the turning point in Kisumu politics.

And as many had predicted, Nyong'o, the former ODM Secretary General bagged the ticket albeit controversially.

Ranguma cried foul, challenged Nyong'o's win with the party's tribunal but his fate was sealed as his appeal was dismissed.

Keen to defend his seat, he decamped from the party and contested as an independent candidate but that did not help as the Senator was overwhelmingly elected as the new Governor.

Ranguma moved to court to challenge Prof. Nyong'o's win but his petition was dismissed for lack of enough evidence.

Ranguma appealed the ruling and the matter is set to be heard at the appellate court.

With political realignments for 2022 starting to take shape, Kisumu Senator Fred Outa is seen as front runner to succeed Nyong'o. If this is anything to go by, then Ranguma's political future depends on his next move on the political chessboard.
