Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Arap Tiren was among the leaders who attended the farmers' stakeholders meeting at Teachers Advisory Center (TAC) in Eldoret town on Monday.
The meeting was meant to discuss on the issues affecting farmers and how they could be solved.
During the meeting, the vocal legislator said they are working with other elected leaders in the region to find a lasting solution to challenges facing farmers.
"We deliberated on various issues that are affecting farmers and we are striving to find solutions that will endeavor to settle these problems that have been perennially crippling this sector," said Tiren.
The MP noted he will initiate bills with some of his counterparts in which the farmers will be safeguarded.
"I am working together with like-minded legislators to initiate and pass a legislation that will ensure farmers rights are safeguarded," the legislator said.
He further said the Maputo Declaration to which Kenya is party to calls for a minimum of 10 percent of national budget be allocated to Agriculture and challenged the government to work towards implementing it.
"Treasury CS stated recently that in Kenya we are at 13 percent but the grain farmer gets only 2.9 percent. The remainder is said to be allocated to Forestry and Water Management, I will be seeking a clarification on the same," said Tiren who was accompanied by several leaders who included Uasin Gishu Senator Prof Margaret Kamar, Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno, Agriculture County Executive Samuel Yego among others.
