Details now indicate that fallen leader and former Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya sought an urgent meeting with then ex-Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga days before his death.

The leader, apparently aware of his pending death as a result of several claims that his life was in danger, sent former Assistant Minister and Kisumu Rural lawmaker Tom Okello to request for an appointment, a surprise move as they were sworn political enemies with Oginga at the time.

Okello was yet to convey the message by the time Mboya was assassinated, a meeting that was probably aimed at requesting for help from Jaramogi.

Mboya sent similar message to Mr Collins Odinge Odera, an advisor and Oginga's speech writer on Tuesday, 4 days before his assassination, but Oginga was already aware of Mboya's efforts to meet him.

"Jaramogi told me he had heard of what Mboya wanted and even mentioned that he (Mboya) had sent then Kisumu Rural MP Tom Odongo-Okello to persuade him for a meeting, but he was yet to convey the message," Odera told the Nation.

The meeting was finally arranged and was set for 3am that Saturday, however, it did not happen, as Mboya was gunned down two hours before the scheduled time, while leaving a chemist along Nairobi's Government Road (now Moi Avenue).
