A Senator allied to Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi is among high profile politicians who accompanied opposition chief Raila Odinga to Kabarak to meet former President Daniel Arap Moi.
George Khaniri (Vihiga, ANC) is the only other opposition leader apart from Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir who flew from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Kabarak to meet the former head of State.
Khaniri who is in Mudavadi's close political circles is a seasoned politician who knows how to interpret political tidings and make intelligent decisions.
Mudavadi, and in extension Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangua are currently not in good books with Raila following the historic meeting between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi on March 9 and subsequently the removal of Wetangula from his Senate Minority seat.
The present absence of a link between Raila and the larger Western vote mainly constituted by the Luhya community is politically suicidal to Raila.
At a time Mudavadi and Wetangula are not in position to accompany him to any event, the former prime minister has to play intelligent and move with the Western Kenya face- and there is a likelihood therefore that Khaniri came in as a substitute to both Mudavadi and Wetangula.
Raila is determined not to lose the Western region. And remember, also, that despite his difference with Mudavadi and Wetangula, he has remained close to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli who united members of the Luhya community ahead of the August general election.
Khaniri may be the man to pull back Mudavadi and Wetangula to Raila's camp. Politics has not permanent friends and enemies.
