Despite his sterling performance little is known about the man from Gusiiland.

Unknown to many Kenyans Matiangi was a civil society activist who has worked for both local and international organisations.

Prior to his commitment to work for the nation, Matiang'i worked for a top American university, he was the liaison for East Africa at the center for International Development, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at State University of New York (SUNY).

The CS has worked for USAID, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), World Bank and Transparency International.

Matiang'i also has a political side, he has previously worked as a political consultant to former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae. The two are family relatives. Matiang'i managed Nyachae's 2002 presidential campaign.

The Education CS is also a former columnist for the Daily Nation.
