Most people fancy outwardly pointing nipples but there are women with inverted nipples (nipples that point inward), here are some facts about these nipples.

1. Nipple piercing is a temporary solution

In case you have inverted nipples then piercing them is a temporary solution that can draw them out, this can be done using a bar or dumbbell. However, there are risks with piercing your nipples.

This process can cause scars that will worsen your condition.

2. Inverted nipples are generic

The main cause of this condition is genetics.

Another cause is underdeveloped, thickened or short lactiferous duct that connects the nipple to breast gland for passage of milk.

A shortened duct forces the nipple to retract inwards.

3. It makes breastfeeding hard

This is not a condition that should worry you most but it will surely affect your breastfeeding.

Your baby will find it hard to use the flat/inverted nipples, it is therefore advisable to seek advice from a lactation expert who will guide you on available techniques to help your little angel.

4. Surgery can fix inverted nipples

Cosmetic and plastic surgeons can correct this condition.

One common process that they use is dividing the duct that makes your nipples to invert.

This affects breastfeeding hence be comfortable with this after effect before undergoing the surgery.
