Whatsapp will stop support for customers using Nokia, Windows and Blackberry phones after  December 31, 2017.

The phones running on old software versions will also be affected.

Additionally, Android Operating Systems (common on Google, Samsung, HTC or OnePlus smartphones) version 2.3.7 and older will stop working on  February 1, 2020.

Whatsapp developers said it was a hard decision for them to make but it was meant to give customers better ways to keep in touch with their loved ones.

"This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using Whatsapp application. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone to continue using Whatsapp," read the notice on Whatsapp website as quoted by the Telegraph.

The messaging app, which was launched in 2009, had more than one billion users before it was bought by Facebook for $19bn in 2014.
